The Box, the tiny bar worth finding in Barcelona

The Box is easy to walk past. Tucked into Carrer d'en Gignàs, just off the busy Gothic Quarter streets, it is small, dark and deliberately unpolished. That is part of the appeal.

This is a bar that has been doing its own thing in the neighbourhood since 2013: cocktails built around homemade infusions, Latin American street food, a tightly packed room and a playlist that changes every night. It feels less like a cocktail bar trying to impress you and more like a place that has figured out exactly what it wants to be.

The most interesting part is the collection behind the bar. The Box currently advertises more than 60 homemade rum and tequila infusions, turning what could be a straightforward drinks menu into something much more playful. The cocktails are inventive without disappearing into technique. A Mamacita combines bell-pepper-infused rum with mango and lime; Bidi Bidi Bam Bam goes smoky and spicy with mezcal, Ancho Reyes, pineapple, lime and peanut salt.

It is the kind of place where you can arrive intending to have one drink and quickly find yourself asking what else is in the infusion cabinet.

What to order

Start with one of the house cocktails rather than defaulting to beer. The House Daiquiri keeps things simple with lime and sugar, while the Margaritas are a good entry point if you want something familiar before exploring the more unusual combinations.

Then look at the signature list.

Mamacita is the obvious choice for something fruity and fresh, with mango and lime balancing the vegetal edge of bell-pepper-infused rum. Bidi Bidi Bam Bam is more adventurous: smoky, spicy and slightly nutty, with mezcal, chilli liqueur, pineapple and peanut salt. If you prefer darker, sweeter flavours, Gourmandise combines tonka-infused rum, espresso and speculoos.

The food is deliberately casual. Hot dogs, nachos and Latin American-inspired dishes make sense here because they give the drinks something substantial to work against. The hot dogs are particularly central to the identity of the place, while burritos, arepas and nachos appear across the current listings.

Don't overthink the order. The Box is better approached as a drinking bar with very good drink and food than as a restaurant where cocktails happen to be available. And do not forget to finish with a "Petit Canard"!

The Box earns its place because it has a point of view.

There are plenty of cocktail bars in Barcelona, and plenty of places serving late-night food. The Box combines the two without sanding off the rough edges. The room is intimate, the food is straightforward, and the drinks have enough personality to make you curious about the next one.

Most importantly, it doesn't feel designed around what a visitor expects Barcelona nightlife to look like. It feels like a bar with its own habits.

That matters in the Gothic Quarter, where it is remarkably easy to end up somewhere interchangeable. The Box gives you something specific: a little room, a long list of infused spirits, loud-ish music, comfort food and bartenders who can steer you towards something depending on what you like.

Go with a friend who is willing to order differently from you. One of you should choose something fruity; the other should go smoky, spicy or herbal. Share the food. Compare drinks. That is probably the best way to understand the place.

When to go

The Box is a night-time proposition. Current listings show it opening from around 19:00, staying open until 01:00 on most nights and until 02:00 on Fridays and Saturdays. It is also listed as having no reservations, so don't arrive with a large group expecting a table to materialise.

Early evening is the move if you want a little more breathing room. Later, the small room becomes part of the experience.

This is not where you go for a polished dinner followed by a single carefully considered cocktail. Come when you want the night to loosen up.

Let the bartender choose your second drink. Tell them whether you like sweet, sour, smoky, bitter or herbal flavours and see where they take you. The whole reason to come to The Box is that the obvious order is rarely the most interesting one, enjoy your night out!
